Module 1 - Falls And Assessment

Introduction to falls in Nursing Homes

• Falls and its’ impact on older people
• Intrinsic and extrinsic falls risk factors
• Current guidelines to falls assessment and prevention
• Recommended mobility assessment tools – TUG and gait speed
• A multifactorial falls risk assessment

Module 2 – Falls Prevention Exercise

• Exercise vs physical activity
• The difference between strength, balance, endurance and flexibility exercises
• Recommendations for falls prevention
• The Otago Exercise Programme

Module 3 – Uses of Mobility Assistive Devices

• Mobility aid definition
• Types of mobility aids
• Rationale for mobility aid prescription
• Guidelines and benefits of using wheelchairs &walking aids
• Correct use of walking aids
• Tips on assisting ambulation of the older person

Module 4 – Medications and Falls

• Strategies to reduce falls-related side effects of medication, including identifying referral profiles for medical review
• Classes of medication associated with falls
• Potential side effects of falls related medication-overview

Who should attend
Allied Health Professional, Ancillary Care Staff, Enrolled Nurse, Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Nurse and Support Care Staff.

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singapore Citizens / Permanent Residents and 45% for Work Pass Holders working in eligible community care organisations.
