Managing Suicide Crisis Over Phone (Classroom and Asynchronous E-learning)

Telephone is one of the earliest remote platform used to provide crisis support and mental health care. The telephone has long been accepted professionally as a means and tool to offer full emotional support and psychological interventions to clients.

This course aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to recognise and manage suicide crisis over the helpline or regular calls with clients.

Who This Course Is For:

Preferably with relevant qualification or experience in the area of Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Casework management, Education or the like

The skills and knowledge for this course, which the learner is assumed to possess, are as follows:

• Be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6;

• Be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6;

• Be able to use numeracy skills equivalent to the Employability Skills Workplace Numeracy (WPN) Level 6; and

• Learners need to have basic knowledge of computer skills

What You’ll Learn:

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
1. Identify personal attitudes and reactions towards suicide that can hinder effective emotional support over the phone compared to face-to-face engagement

2. Apply empathetic listening and conversation structure to engage a suicidal person over phone

3. Apply the suicide risk assessment questions and intervention over phone

4. Implement strategies to manage various types of callers over phone

Mode of Delivery:

Blended learning (Asynchronous E-Learning, Facilitated Classroom Training)

1. Asynchronous E-Learning: Videos, drag-and-drop, reflection

2. Facilitated classroom training: Lectures, Demonstrations, Case studies, Brainstorming, Experiential Activities, Role-Playing, Reflection

Day 0: Asynchronous E-Learning (3 hour)

Day 1: 9:00am – 6:00pm
Day 2: 9:00am – 5:40pm

Written Assessment (20 minutes per learner)
Day 2: 5:40pm – 6:00pm

Role Play Assessment (40 minutes ONLINE per learner)

Day 3 - 5: 9:00am – 5:00pm

*Trainer will share more on the role play assessment schedule during the training.
