The course is designed for Nursing Home professionals who need to attend to potentially aggressive family members and persons who cause harm, in the context of vulnerable adult protection. Learners will learn frameworks and strategies to prepare themselves for engaging potentially aggressive individuals, as well as de-escalate them. Learners will also learn about the importance of self-care and strategies to self-care in the management of challenging behaviours.
Course Objectives
At the end of the training, learners will be able to:
- List signs of escalation.
- Explain the behavioural change stairway.
- Apply verbal and non-verbal communication skills to manage challenging behaviours from Vas’ family members.
- Demonstrate approaches in managing challenging behaviours.
- Apply self-care strategies to address burnout, secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma.

Trainer’s Profile
Ng Kiah Yin holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology at Central Queensland University, Australia and is currently the Assistant Director of Adult Protective Service from the Ministry of Social & Family Development. She oversees capability development and organizational development for a division as well as capability development for the adult protection sector.
