Course Objectives:

The course encompasses aspects of theoretical and practical application of music in healthcare settings. Didactic course components include historical use of music in health and healing, as well as foundations on how music is a powerful tool for wellness. Practical portions require participants to actively engage in music experientials that they could apply in their work settings. A background in music is not necessary for this course.

Course Content:

• Gain an appreciation of the role of music in healing, health-maintaining and health-giving contexts
• Formulate an understanding of the importance and meaning of music to self
• Acquire technical skills in basic instrument play, and safe handling of instruments
• Learn basic rhythmic playing/leading
• Acquire knowledge in using music for symptom management
• Acquire knowledge in the safe use of music
• Acquire knowledge in basic music therapy concepts
• Differentiate between music therapy and music in health
• Acquire skills in music activity planning
• Acquire experience in music activity implementation
• Identify resources and support for designing and implementing music activities

Who Should Attend: Therapy assistants, nurses and centre-based staff, activity staff, programme coordinators and all other community care staff involved in conducting activities with seniors.
