This course aims to provide knowledge and skills in administering oxygen therapy safely. It introduces the basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system. The administration of oxygen therapy will be discussed and practiced, taking into consideration safety measures of infection control practices and documentation. The use of pulse oximetry to complement patient assessment in the measurement of peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) for respiratory conditions will be discussed.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to

1. Explain the basic anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system
2. Discuss respiratory assessment and the alterations in respiratory system
3. State the indications and special considerations for oxygen therapy
4. Apply pulse oximetry as a monitoring device.
5. Describe the types of oxygen therapy devices/items/equipment
6. Assist in administering oxygen therapy in accordance with infection control practices and organisational guidelines
7. Discuss the possible complications encountered during oxygen therapy
8. Perform documentation correctly and escalate to supervisors accordingly.
