Engage and communicate.

This course will help Befrienders understand and grasp key components and mechanisms of befriending Seniors and be empowered to provide effective and sound befriending services.

Course Objectives

  • Better appreciation of the fundamentals & philosophy behind befriending Seniors
  • Equipped with skills to effectively engage and communicate with Seniors
  • Sharpened observation skills on Seniors’ health status, home environment safety and other needs, and raise red flags promptly
  • Guided to Organisational and Community resources to initiate service linkages

Who should attend

AAC/AAC (Care)/IBP staff who provide Befriending/Buddying services to seniors and who manage befrienders.

Pre-requisite Module

5-Elearning modules are required prior to F2F training (2-day)

  • M1 MHA 1 - Understanding the signs and symptoms of Mental Health issues
  • M2 MHA 2 - Supporting Persons with Mental Health issue
  • M3 Understand Dementia
  • M4 Dementia Care Basic Level - Person-Centred Care and Behaviours of Concern
  • M5 Dementia Care Basic Level - Enriching Lives
Day 1
  • Understanding ageing
  • Fundamentals of befriending seniors
  • Roles & responsibilities of befrienders for home visits
  • Building rapport with seniors during home visits
Day 2
  • Understanding various chronic diseases that is common to seniors
  • Understanding mental health – dementia & depression
  • Safety concerns during home visits
  • Observation, monitoring of needs & timely raising of red flags for areas of concerns
  • Linking community & organisational resources to assist seniors
  • Assessment (0.5 hours/ student) - to be scheduled 7 - 8 days after Day 2
    • Assessment 1: Reflective Journal
    • Assessment 2: Oral Question

Certificate:

Upon completion of community befriending of Seniors (basic) and 5 E-learning courses, a certificate of performance will be issued ( only 1 certificate)

Trainer Profile:

Sandra Foo is a Nurse Educator with extensive training and facilitation experiences in the areas of Caregivers Training, Dementia Awareness Training and Training of Community Service Support Workers and Befrienders, equipping learners with practical knowledge and skills to build their confidence and competencies in caring for seniors at home or at work
