Description

This course enables support care staff to have an understanding of ageing, what the needs of the older persons are and the current climate surrounding the ageing experience in Singapore. It aims to provide them with the essential tools to develop deeper connections with the older persons and to better meet their care needs.

Course Objectives
• Identify the stage of ageing in life and the needs of an older person
• Understand the multi-faceted aspects of ageing and ageing issues
• Understand the service delivery system for older people and their families
• Understand the macro issues and perspectives involved in service provision for older persons
• To examine the working relationship between different stakeholders
• Demonstrate an understanding of the communication process
• Acknowledge the importance of self-awareness and its impact on communication
• To recognise the need for social assessment
• To Identify the approaches and tools that can be used in a social assessment

  • The principles of community-based gerontology
  • Identify relevant issues in eldercare - ageism and quality of life issues
  • Recognise the different levels of intervention in working with older persons
  • Understand the service delivery framework for community-based eldercare
  • Understand the impact of social, economic and political development on the ageing experience

  • Understand effective communication with the older person and their caregiver
  • The effective use of self in working with the older person and their families
  • Using a family systems approach in working with illness, disability and the older person

  • Conduct social assessment in the community and care plan formulation
  • Case management approach in geriatric, community-based eldercare services
  • Develop a framework for understanding the psycho-emotional functioning of the older person and their families
  • Assessment

Target Audience

Support care staff with or less than 5 years of experience.

Trainers’ Profile

Phyllis Lee holds Masters in Counselling and Gerontology and is ACTA-certified by Singapore Workforce Development Agency. A firm believer in active ageing coupled with her post graduate academic training, she has been actively involved in various discussions and activities (relating to ageing issues) both at the societal level as well as with various government departments.
