Description

This course equips the healthcare support worker with the skills and knowledge required to care for bowel elimination and suppository insertion. Knowledge and understanding of basic anatomy and physiology of elimination will be discussed.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to;

  1. Explain the anatomy and physiology of bowel elimination.
  2. Discuss on factors affecting bowel elimination, its causes and treatment
  3. Discuss some common bowel elimination problems, its causes and treatment
  4. Discuss contributory factors, symptoms and treatment for constipation
  5. Explain the administration of prescribed medications for suppositories and enema and its effective actions.
  6. Demonstrate procedural skills on assisting insertion of suppository and administration of enema.

  1. Anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system
  2. Defecation/bowel movement
  3. Characteristics of faeces
  4. Factors influencing bowel elimination.
  5. Common bowel elimination problems
  6. Constipation: contributory causes, symptoms and its treatment
  7. Prescribed medications and its effects: Suppository and enema
  8. Procedural skills for assisting insertion of suppositories and administration enema
