Behavioural Communication in Dementia Care

Course Objectives

This 1-day modular course aims to equip learners with strategies for effective communication with persons living with dementia and facilitate understanding of behaviour change as a means of communicating unmet needs, so as to apply a range of options to manage the impact of behaviour change.

  • Describe the impact of dementia on communication
  • Apply strategies for effective communication with a person with dementia
  • Explain behaviour associated with dementia
  • Identify potential triggers for behaviour associated with dementia
  • Identify a range of options for managing the impact of behaviour change
  • Identify signs that would alert you to the possibility of elder abuse

This course is one of the 5 modular courses that can be stacked to attain a “Certificate of Accomplishment” in Foundations of Person-Centred Dementia Care. Learners can choose to register for individual modular courses that meet the immediate needs at their own pace, and a “Certificate of Performance” will be issued upon the successful completion of each course.

Assessment

Learners will be assessed via a 1.5 hour in person session on their competencies acquired through the learnings.

The assessment will be conducted within 5 working days after the course. Learners will be informed of the schedule via email upon course confirmation.

SNB-CPE points will be awarded.

Who Should Attend

Support care staff, ancillary care staff, corporate services staff and volunteers who would like to be equipped with a basic understanding of how to care for people living with dementia in a variety of settings including the family home, centre-based services, and residential care facilities.
