Description

The course aims to build capability amongst senior staff and management from Nursing Homes, to ensure that a robust reporting workflow and escalation protocols are in place for staff to respond appropriately and promptly to complaints of alleged abuse.

Course Objectives

  • Identify the early signs of abuse and learn measures to safeguard residents against the risk of abuse and prevent its occurrence.
  • Apply the steps in responding to the suspected, alleged or actual abuse once it is identified and taking immediate actions to protect the resident from abuse.
  • Be familiar with the incident reporting process, escalation protocol on when and who is to escalate the abuse to and notify the relevant authorities.
  • Conduct investigations of the abuse, follow up and document outcomes undertaken by the Nursing Home.
  • Ensure that appropriate actions are taken against the perpetrator responsible for abuse.

Course Outline (2 days)

This course requires students to complete pre-reading and Quiz at least 3 days before the commencement date.

Pre-reading

  • Definition of Elder abuse
  • Protection of residents from elder abuse in nursing home
  • Reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent it, before it occurs

Day1

  • Responding to suspected, alleged or actual abuse and initiate an investigation, interview, observe and conduct medical check and proper documentation.
  • Reporting suspected, alleged or actual abuse
  • Early detection to identify the Abuse Workflow chart on the indication of suspected elderly abuse detected in nursing home protocols.
  • Proper investigation and respond to any allegation of abuse.
  • Disciplinary measures against the staff responsible for the abuse
  • Accurate reporting and proper documentation on elderly abuse.
  • Briefing on the cyclical nature of Gibs' reflective cycle
  • Case study discussion.

Day 2

  • Case study presentations.
  • Group presentations to evaluate understanding and applications on elderly abuse.

Dr. Guna D holds a Doctorate in Philosophy at Alice Lee Centre of Nursing Studies, National University of Singapore and is currently the Deputy Chief of Nursing with Sunlove home. She oversees and provides quality assurance and training to the nursing and healthcare team. With more than 15 years of experience in education, she is also proficient in curriculum design and reviewing assessments.
