This course equips senior staff and management in Nursing Homes with the essential knowledge and tools to identify and respond to signs of elder abuse. It focuses on building a clear reporting workflow and escalation protocol to ensure timely and appropriate action. Participants will learn when and how to escalate cases to management and relevant authorities, enabling coordinated and effective interventions to safeguard residents’ well-being.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

• Identify early signs of elder abuse and implement appropriate preventive measures.
• Apply correct procedures when responding to suspected, alleged, or confirmed cases of abuse.
• Be familiarised with incident reporting process, escalation protocol on when and who is to escalate the abuse to, and notify the relevant authorities.
• Conduct and follow-up on investigations of the abuse and document records on the outcome of investigation undertaken by the management.
• Ensure that appropriate actions are taken against perpetrator responsible for abuse.

PREREQUISITE
This course requires participants to complete Pre-Reading and Quiz at least 3 days before the commencement date.

COURSE OUTLINE (2 days)

• Basics of elder abuse (physical, sexual, psychological)
• Identifying risk and triggers, and carrying out preventive steps
• Awareness of victim’s fears, embarrassment, confusion and reluctance to cooperate, and working to overcoming reluctance.
• Management of handling the suspected abuse situation e.g.: interviewing suspect, disclosing to Next-of-Kin tactfully
• Escalation Protocol and interventions in managing abuse
• Managing and communicating with Next-of-Kin after incidents of abuse
• Early detection to identify the Abuse Workflow chart on the indication of suspected elderly abuse detected in nursing home protocols
• Dealing with ethical dilemmas situations (when perpetrator has no mental capacity; Next-of-Kin of victim does not want to report, etc) & principles to consider.

Support care staff, Enrolled Nurse, Psychosocial Staff, Registered Nurse, Senior Management

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Participants should:

• Possess at least 2 years of working experience in working with Seniors in the nursing home settings (Candidates within less than 2 years of working experience will be considered on a case by case basis)
• Preferably be in seniority position or management position in nursing homes
• Be able to develop or implement or make changes to existing workflow and escalation protocol
