Description

The purpose of oral suctioning is to maintain a patent airway and improve oxygenation and comfort for the patient. This course equips the healthcare support worker with the skills and knowledge required to assist in caring for patients who require oral suctioning to maintain the patency of an airway.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the basic anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
  2. Explain the purpose of oral suctioning, contraindication and its complication
  3. Describe the preparation and monitoring of client in oral suctioning
  4. Perform standards of practices and precautions to be taken
  5. Demonstrate oral suctioning and care of patient before, intra and after procedure.
  6. Identify red flags and escalate signs of respiratory distress appropriately

Course Outline

  1. Purpose of oral suctioning
  2. Types and parts of suction catheter
  3. Assess, plan, intervene and evaluate condition of patient/client according to care plan
  4. Safety consideration according to organisational guidelines and safety procedures
  5. Correct technique of oral suctioning.
  6. Monitoring and evaluation of care
  7. Report and escalate if abnormal
